Super Falcons Coach Thomas Dernneby says Nigeria has achieved it’s first goal of the African women cup of Nations which was to qualify for the FIFA Women World Cup in France and promise to bring the Cup back to Nigeria.
The Super Falcons defeated the Lioness of Cameroon 4-2 on penalties after it ended goalless on regular time.
Coach Dernneby praised his team for defending well despite loosing the ball on several occasions.
“We said when we came here, that we had two goals, the first one was to qualify for the World Cup, we did that today, I’m impressed. When it comes to the final we will do whatever it takes to bring the Cup back to Nigeria.”
“We know when we came that Cameroon is a good team, honestly I was not happy in the first 10 to 15 mins, my players were anxious, we lost the ball too much and definitely in the midfield, we had to defend alot. Looking at the game, we were compact, we defended well in depth and width I think that was key in our win.”
Furthermore, he said the attack needs improvement for the Falcons to come better in the finals.
“It’s a good stand to know it’s difficult to score against us, definitely we need to improve on the attack, quick passing and more options upfront.”
Speaking ahead of the Final the tactician said the team has a very good chance of lifting the trophy but they need to recover from today’s game so they can come out better on Saturday.
“We have a very good chance to beat South Africa, now it’s time to rest two days, extra day before the final. It’s really a tough game today, as you can see alot of players are tired, we have 3 to 4 of them who had cramps, it’s time for recovery and I will say we have a good chance to win in the final.”
The Super Falcons will on Saturday take on the Bayana Bayana of South Africa in the finals of the African Women Nations Cup, the only team to defeat the Falcons in the tournament so far.
