Gateway United football club of Ogun State this Saturday made it two successive home wins in the Nigeria National League after getting past Apex Kranes FC, 2-1 at the MKO Abiola International Stadium, Kuto, Abeokuta.
With the team drawn bye in match day two of the NNL, the Akeem Busari coached side dominated play but were not enterprising enough in the final third.
The first real chance came when Apex Krane goalkepper had the ball spilled in the area but Adodo Stephen couldn’t aim at goal.
Against the run of play, the visitors took the lead courtesy of Odili Chukuma’s deflected strike in the 34th minute.
Sanni Jamiu tried to get the team back into the game with an effort that went wide off the goal.
Gateway United finally levelled proceedings from the spot as Michael Okolo calmly converted the kick after a brilliant dribble in the area saw Seyi Okeowo turn his marker in and out and was hacked down for the referee to point to the spot.
Both teams headed for the halftime break tied on goals.
Just as he ended the first half, Seyi Okeowo freekick went inches wide as Gateway United searched for the goal to put the host in front.
The winner would thereafter come, once again from the penalty spot when the referee adjudged an Apex Krane FC player to have handled the ball in the area off a free kick from Gateway United.
Up step Michael Okolo for a brace and he didn’t disappoint sending the goalkeeper the other way in the 69th minute to hand Gateway United all maximum three points.
Next for Gateway United is their first away game of the season at Krisdera stadium, Omoku, Rivers State to face Go Round FC.
