The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) could continue with the organization and hosting of the U17 and U20 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments next year despite the cancellation of the World Cup by FIFA.
The world football governing body announced the cancellation of the two tournaments last week, citing the outbreak of the COVID-19 Pandemic as the reason for the decision.
But CAF has made plans of the tournaments to take place this year with the 12 countries to participate in the 16th edition already known.
This year CAF U20 cup will have seven debutants with the expansion of the tournament from 8 to 12 participants.
Tournament favourites like Nigeria, Senegal, Mali and Zambia failed to qualify for this year edition with Uganda, Tanzania, Namibia, CAR, Tunisia, Mozambique etc making their first appearance in the tournament.
Host, Mauritania are also making their first appearance at the CAF U20 Cup after being awarded the hosting rights in 2018.
This will be three times Africa Champions, Ghana 12th appearance while Cameroon will be making their 10th appearance after winning their only title in 1995.
Also countries like Burkina Faso, Gambia and Morocco are not new to the tournament, While Burkina Faso and Gambia best finished was a fourth and third place in 2003 and 2007, Morocco has crowned champions in 1997.
